AMSOIL recently published its own data-driven breakdown of this exact question, and the numbers are worth walking through.
Fewer Oil Changes, Not Worse Protection
The average American drives about 12,200 miles (approx. 19,600 km) a year. On a conventional 5,000-mile (approx. 8,000 km) interval, that’s roughly five oil changes annually. On AMSOIL Signature Series’ normal-service interval of up to 25,000 miles (approx. 40,200 km) or one year, that same driver needs about one — a roughly 80% reduction in oil changes for a typical annual-mileage driver, without shortening the interval below what AMSOIL’s own spec supports.
That’s not just a theoretical number. As AMSOIL detailed in its own July 2026 write-up, Stretch Every Dollar in Your Garage, a 125,000-mile (approx. 201,000 km) test on a 2025 Ford F-150 Raptor running Signature Series showed 0% oil screen plugging and maintained horsepower and torque for the entire test — a real-world data point behind the extended-interval claim, not just a marketing number.
The Filter Matters As Much As the Oil
Extending your oil interval only works if the filter can keep up. AMSOIL’s own oil filters are rated for 99% efficiency at 20 microns with a service life matched to the 25,000-mile interval — using a standard filter rated for a shorter service life on an extended oil change defeats the purpose, since a saturated filter undermines the protection the longer-life oil is providing in the first place.

One more tool worth knowing about: used oil analysis testing, which runs around $25 USD (approx. $35 CAD) per sample. Rather than guessing whether it’s safe to stretch an interval, a lab test tells you exactly how much life is actually left in the oil in your specific engine and driving conditions.
The Catch
None of this works if you’re not actually running a full synthetic rated for the longer interval and matching it with a compatible filter — dropping in a cheaper conventional oil and just waiting longer between changes is a different (and much worse) decision than what’s described here.
