0W-8 vs 0W-16 vs 0W-20 — with Toyota and Nissan both telling dealers to substitute oil grades during the 2026 supply crunch (see our previous post on why the shortage happened), a lot of owners are asking the same question: what actually changes if my mechanic puts in 0W-16 instead of the 0W-8 my car calls for? Here’s the plain-language breakdown of what these numbers mean, and when substituting is actually safe.

Reading the Viscosity Rating

Every motor oil grade is really two numbers in one:

  • The “W” number (0W) describes how the oil flows when cold — specifically how easily it pumps and protects your engine at startup. All three grades here are “0W,” meaning they behave nearly identically in cold weather. This is not where the differences lie.
  • The number after the dash (8, 16, or 20) describes how thick the oil is once the engine reaches full operating temperature (measured in centistokes at 100°C). This is the number that actually changes between these three grades — and it’s the one that matters for engine protection and fuel economy.

Why Automakers Went So Thin

0W-16 became common around 2016–2018 as manufacturers chased better fuel economy and lower CAFE emissions numbers; 0W-8 is newer still, showing up mainly on hybrids, where the engine cycles on and off frequently and needs to build oil pressure and full protection almost instantly. Thinner oil means less internal friction, which translates to measurable fuel-economy gains — but it also means there’s less margin built into the formulation before wear protection starts to suffer.

Is It Actually Safe to Substitute a Thicker Grade?

This is exactly the question Toyota’s own April 2026 bulletin answers — and the answer, for a single service interval, is generally yes, with caveats. Going one step up (0W-8 → 0W-16, or 0W-16 → 0W-20) gives you a slightly thicker oil film, which if anything adds a small margin of protection at operating temperature. The tradeoffs are minor: marginally more internal friction, a small potential dip in fuel economy, and — this is the part worth paying attention to — the oil has to still carry the right API and ILSAC certification and manufacturer approval for your engine, not just be “close enough” on viscosity.

That last point matters more than most people realize. Grade alone doesn’t tell you whether an oil is rated for things like LSPI (low-speed pre-ignition) protection in turbocharged engines, or whether it meets a specific OEM spec like GM’s dexos1 Gen 2 or Toyota’s own internal requirements. Two oils can both say “0W-20” on the bottle and perform very differently once you look at the additive package behind that number.

What This Means Practically

Short-term, one-interval substitution up a single grade — as Toyota itself has authorized — isn’t something to be alarmed about. What’s worth avoiding is treating any random 0W-20 as an automatic drop-in for every 0W-8 or 0W-16 application indefinitely, especially if you’re not sure the product carries the certifications your engine actually needs.

The better fix, if you don’t want to deal with substitutions or dealer rationing at all, is sourcing a full synthetic oil that’s actually built and approved for your original spec — not just close to it.
